Abstract
Policing cyberspace is becoming highly impossible due to the anonymity and flexibility of the offender. As cybercrime is borderless, the detection and investigation process are very difficult to execute by the cyber unit. The present study aims to explore the nature and the challenges of the specialized cyber unit in Bangladesh. Space Transition and Routine Activity theories were used to explain the nature of the behavior of the criminal and the causation of cybercrime. The study is descriptive in nature with quantitative method and by using survey method with the structured questionnaire. The study indicates three types of policing are directed in the Cyber Police Center (CPC) of CID with digital forensics, cyber investigation, and cyber patrolling; besides several techniques like digital forensic analysis, social engineering, virtual server surveillance, open-source intelligence to detect and combat cybercrimes. The research found that the majority of the police officers in CPC (81%) faced challenges while combating cybercrime. Public awareness, geo-fencing, stakeholders’ participation, two-factor authentications will lead to safer cyberspace.
