Abstract

This study investigated the predictive influence of joint psycho-social factors as determinant of truancy among senior secondary school II students in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba state Nigeria. To guide the study, a research objective, research question, and research hypothesis were developed, and the design was a descriptive survey. The sample size was 6,968, and 357 students were chosen from a population of 6,968 Senior Secondary II students using a non-probability purposive sampling technique as directed by the research advisor. To collect data for the study, an instrument titled "Psycho-social predictors' questionnaire and student's attendance register" was used, which has face and content validity through expert judgement and a reliability co-efficient of 0.73, indicating that the instrument is reliable for data collection.

Multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypothesis. The results indicated that academic self-efficacy, interest in schooling, parental involvement, peer influence, and test anxiety were significantly influence truancy among secondary school students in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State. Hence the null hypotheses were rejected. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Teacher should avoid unnecessary tests mostly when it is not needed, this will reduce tension and anxiety among the students. Also, necessary advice should be given to students by the school administrators and school counselor to avoid any peer influence that can jeopardize their future.
